WATCH: Fire destroys superyachts in Rhode Island marina

Fire Hinckley yacht services

Two superyachts have gone up in flames during a major fire at a marina in Portsmouth, in the US state of Rhode Island.

Local fire department units responded to the blaze at Hinckley Yacht Services marina on Friday.

It has been reported that the 30m Ocean Alexander 100 superyacht Drinkability and a 32m sailing yacht named Danneskjold, which were both dry-docked, have been totally destroyed. One man was sent to hospital with burn injuries.

Firefighters on land and sea tackled the fire for over eight hours, with the charred boats smouldering throughout the night. Watch the huge fire take hold below:

Drinkability was reportedly being repaired by a crew when the fire began. The flames spread to nearby Danneskjold “within minutes,” an eyewitness told local TV station WPRI, sending up a thick plume of smoke that could be seen for miles around.

Marina employee Kate Moreira recalls hearing several loud bangs from the powerboat, sending staff running away in fear. A firefighter later confirmed that three small propane tanks on the scene exploded.

Thankfully, the fire was contained before it could spread to a nearby structure housing vintage yachts.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown and is now under investigation.
