WATCH: Fisherman saves boy from drifting ice with one cast

A schoolboy has been rescued by a fisherman after he got stranded on a drifting ice floe in Ukraine.

The video of the moment was filmed by a fisherman Richard Gorda, who saved the boy from the Desenka river in Kyiv, according to the Daily Mail.

The clip shows the child, who reportedly said he could not swim, being carried away on a drifting piece of ice.

The schoolboy was playing near the river with a friend when the incident happened. They were inspecting the ice when it started cracking under their feet.

One of them managed to jump to safety but the other got stranded on a drifting ice floe and was carried 65 feet (20 metres) away from the shore.

Gorda is heard calling on the horrified boy to remain calm.

The fisherman casts his line which the boy manages to grip before being pulled towards the shore. The cast is about two minutes into the clip.

Gorda shared the video on Facebook.

“Luckily, we turned out to be in the right place and at the right time,” he says.

“The fact that I cast [the spinning rod] and hit at once is God’s mercy.

“I might have had no time for another try. The ice piece was cracking under that boy.

“The child didn’t even get wet or anything, he’s safe and sound but he will learn that lesson for life.

“Watch out for your children and never allow them approaching [icy] water.”
