Using its many years of experience developing outboard engines and boat control systems, in 2023 Yamaha improved and relaunched its popular 150hp outboard engine, offering multiple options enhanced with exciting top end tech, previously found exclusively in Yamaha’s Premium engines.
Overview
Benefitting from full in-house manufacture, Yamaha now produces three versions of its 150hp High Power engine model, with the host of technical enhancements making it well suited to either single or twin installations.
- Mechanical controls, with a hydraulic helm pump
- Drive-by-Wire, with a hydraulic helm pump
- Drive-by-Wire, with an electric helm – this version is compatible with Yamaha’s Helm Master EX boat control system, offering greater confidence and control with close quarters manoeuvring
Creating a continuous identity between the Premium and High Power segments, the 150hp gains from fresh new styling and two colour options, grey or pearlescent white, with the new cowling shape incorporating air intakes and side vents.
New features include the TotalTilt function with integrated tilt limit for effortless trailering and convenience when tilting, and integrated Digital Electric Steering (DES).
Performance data
This 2.8 litre, 4-cylinder outboard has double overhead camshafts (DOHC) for improved airflow to boost power and speed.
With two intake valves and two exhaust valves on each cylinder, (each with twin camshafts which are driven independently) intake and exhaust efficiency are dramatically improved, optimising fuel use during combustion.
The Transistor Coil Ignition (TCI) system ensures easy starting, consistency, and longer plug life, which results in an ultimately more reliable engine.
Designed to be ultra-compact, the 150hp has a special offset crankshaft and gear-driven balance shaft, while the labyrinth exhaust system, with its water sealed outer walls, makes it exceptionally quiet too.

Ideal for use on both recreational and commercial RIBs, sports boats, and motorboats in either single or twin engine configurations to maximise on water acceleration, power and performance.
