In Focus: Yamaha to reveal hydrogen outboard at Miami show
Yamaha Motor will unveil a prototype hydrogen-powered outboard motor at the Miami International Boat Show 2024.
The prototype has special specifications for hydrogen fuel compatibility and will be on display during the show, which runs from February 14-18, 2024, in Miami, Florida, USA.
In a statement, Yamaha Motor says it has set a companywide goal to achieve carbon neutrality in Scope 3 emissions by 2050.
Scope 3 emissions are the result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by the reporting organisation but that the organisation indirectly affects in its value chain.
To achieve carbon neutrality with marine products, Yamaha says it is promoting a multi-directional development approach, looking to other new energy sources and technologies in addition to its electrification efforts.
The company says it will continue promoting the research and development of technologies that contribute to sustainability. Yamaha will continue to develop all-electric solutions but will pursue them as part of its greater multi-pronged approach, which includes hydrogen engines, carbon-neutral synthetic fuels and fuel cells.
During the American Boating Congress in May 2023, in Washington, D.C., Yamaha and other industry leaders conducted meetings on Capitol Hill to discuss industry challenges and promote sustainable marine fuel, the need to mitigate aquatic invasive species, and the industry’s desire to deploy technical solutions to reduce the risk of vessel strikes to marine mammals.
