Australian authorities set fire to Indonesian fishing boats

The Australian Border Force (ABF) has ramped up protection of its domestic fisheries, seizing Indonesian fishing vessels and setting fire to three boats that were caught illegally fishing in Australian waters.

Last week, the ABF successfully intercepted 16 foreign vessels fishing illegally in the vicinity of Rowley Shoals off the northern Western Australian coast. Three vessels were set on fire during the operation. It is understood that the remaining 16 fishing vessels were escorted out of Australian waters.

In a statement, the ABF said: “Last week, Maritime Border Command (MBC) and WA Fisheries on-water patrol vessels, with embarked AFMA Fisheries Officers, joined forces to successfully locate the illegal fishing boats. The coordinated efforts of ABF cutter Cape Nelson, HMAS Larrakia and WA fisheries vessel PV Walcott resulted in 16 legislative forfeiture actions and three vessel destructions.”

A total of 630kg of trepang (sea cucumber) and a range of fishing apparatus was seized over the weekend. None of the fishermen were detained.
