Awlgrip expands Gloss Finish Primer to North America and Asia-Pacific

Awlgrip has expanded its Gloss Finish Primer to North America and Asia-Pacific, following its introduction in Europe in 2025.

The two-in-one coating product combines the functions of a finish primer and show coat in a single application. It is designed for use within the Awlgrip coating system and is available for new custom-build superyachts as well as maintenance and repair work.

Awlgrip – part of coatings giant AkzoNobel – says the product’s high-gloss surface allows applicators to identify surface imperfections before the final topcoat is applied. It also removes one application layer from the coating process, which can involve up to 15 layers of paint on a superyacht.

The product is also intended for refit and repair work. According to Awlgrip, the Gloss Finish Primer produces up to 50 per cent lower volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions per square metre than a standard two-step system using separate finish primer and show coat. This reduction is attributed to its higher volume solids and the removal of one application layer.

Gloss Finish Primer is compatible with the wider Awlgrip coating system.

James Morton, marketing director at AkzoNobel Marine, Protective and Yacht Coatings, says: “Awlgrip Gloss Finish Primer has already proven its value with customers across Europe since its launch in 2025. Bringing it to North America and Asia-Pacific is a natural next step in our commitment to being a truly global player, we want every customer, wherever they’re based, to have access to the same leading technology and the efficiency it brings to their business.”

Jemma Lampkin, global commercial director at AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings, adds: “Our customers operate all over the world, and they deserve the same standard of innovation no matter where they are. Extending Awlgrip Gloss Finish Primer into North America and Asia-Pacific reflects our dedication to making outstanding results accessible globally and reinforces our position as a partner that delivers consistently.”

Awlgrip Gloss Finish Primer is now available across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.
