Dutch builder Alumax opens aluminium shipyard in Vietnam
Dutch boatbuilder Alumax Amsterdam officially inaugurated its new aluminium shipbuilding site in Vietnam’s northern Bac Ninh province on 1 July. The facility is the first shipyard in Vietnam to operate using technology, designs and manufacturing processes transferred directly from the Netherlands.
The new plant marks a significant step forward for Vietnam’s domestic shipbuilding industry. Production at the site is geared towards manufacturing European-standard aluminium vessels for both the Vietnamese domestic market and international export.
According to the company, the factory will produce commercial and leisure vessels. The build pipeline includes patrol boats, government service craft, specialised high-speed boats, passenger ferries and aluminium fishing vessels. For the marine leisure sector, the yard will manufacture private yachts and catamaran party boats.
The Bac Ninh operation has been established through a partnership between Alumax Boats, Netherlands-based James Boat Technology and Vietnamese industrial group Sơn Hà Group.
Alumax Amsterdam says it considers Vietnam not only a promising market but also as its strategic manufacturing hub in Asia. The company has committed to long-term investment through technology transfer, workforce training and the development of a domestic supply chain.
By combining Dutch shipbuilding expertise with local manufacturing capabilities, the project is expected to help establish Vietnam as a producer of internationally certified aluminium vessels while enhancing the country’s competitiveness in the global maritime industry.
