The Andalusian Public Ports Agency (APPA) has opened a tender for a €1.95 million ($2.21 million) upgrade to the wave barrier system at the Port of Punta Umbría in Huelva, southern Spain.

The project, commissioned by the Regional Ministry of Public Works, Territorial Planning and Housing, aims to improve protection for the marina basin and will remodel the perimeter protection wave barrier system of the Punta Umbría marina.

The site is currently heavily exposed to strong tidal currents, fluctuating water levels, and continuous wake energy generated by vessel traffic navigating the main channel.

Once the contract is awarded, construction and installation works are expected to take eight months.

The existing barrier consists of three sections measuring 300 metres to the front, 48 metres to the north-west and 12 metres to the south-east. The existing system relies on 12-metre-long floating modules secured by five-tonne anchors.

Under the new APPA plans, these modules will be replaced with upgraded components engineered to withstand the local hydrodynamic conditions, while driven steel piles will replace the current fixing system.

Acting regional minister for development Rocío Díaz said the investment would “continue the process of modernising fishing facilities and improve conditions in the fishing and recreational sectors.”

Interested parties have until 28 August to submit applications through the regional government’s online procurement platform.
