Makefast unveils cassette awning for smaller and retrofit boat designs
As boatbuilders look for flexible, low-impact shading systems that can fit modern hull designs, UK-based Makefast Group has developed the Cassette Awning, a compact powered system designed to mount externally to a vessel’s structure. The new unit is being unveiled at Metstrade, but for those not visiting, full details are available online.
Chris Cooper, sales manager at Makefast Group, says the design opens new opportunities for smaller vessels: “The engineering of the Cassette Awning gives smaller day boats the opportunity to integrate Makefast’s powered shading without requiring a large superstructure.” He adds that its modular design makes it equally suitable for retrofit projects, noting: “With multiple mounting options, it can be specified during a boat’s concept stage, but its innovative design also makes the ideal aftermarket solution for powered shade.”
Unlike the company’s existing awning systems, the Cassette Awning is a fully self-contained unit built from lightweight aluminium. It operates on 12V or 24V systems and can include an optional solar charger and battery pack, removing the need to run wiring through the vessel. This feature targets smaller craft and OEMs seeking faster installation with minimal structural modification.
The awning’s slim profile and quiet operation make it compatible with contemporary deck layouts. Optional integrated LED lighting in the valance provides ambient illumination, while multiple mounting systems are designed to suit varied configurations.
Available in standard sizes, the awning’s enclosed cassette protects the internal components when retracted, improving durability and reducing maintenance. The use of marine-grade materials and precision mechanics ensures performance across both production and custom builds.
Makefast will also display its wider range of awnings, carbon poles, sunroofs and hydraulic systems at Metstrade (03.101) which are all designed and manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Newtown, Wales.
