Marine electrician skills bootcamp: dates for 2026
The UK’s only marine electrician skills bootcamp has announced the start dates for its 2026 editions.
Organised by British Maritime Training & Assessment (BMTA), two bootcamps will begin 16 May and 5 September 2026.
The courses are open to those already working in the maritime sector, particularly maritime employers looking to strengthen workforce resilience and build in‑house capability; and to self‑employed domestic electricians seeking to diversify into marine work with full funding available for independent learners.
The programme remains the only course of its kind in the UK, created to address critical skills shortages across the maritime sector and support the region’s growing demand for competent marine electrical specialists.
Owen Davies, partner at BMTA, comments: “We’re incredibly proud of how successful the Marine Electrician Skills Bootcamps have been so far, and we’re excited to be delivering even more courses this year and opening up career opportunities and job progression in the maritime industry to more people.
“The response from learners and employers has been fantastic, and it’s clear there is real demand for high‑quality, practical marine electrical training in the Solent. Expanding our offer means we can support even more individuals into these specialist roles and help regional businesses strengthen their teams with the skills they need for the future.”
Delivered through a hybrid model, the ten to 12 week programme blends online learning with hands‑on practical sessions. Aligned with real‑world industry needs and developed in collaboration with employers, the marine electrician skills bootcamp trains participants with the skills to build capability in marine electrical systems, battery technologies, navigation electronics, and NMEA networking.
The programme is funded through the Government’s skills bootcamp initiative and delivered locally through the Solent Growth Partnership. This means:
- Self‑employed participants can train fully funded
- SMEs contribute 10 per cent of the course cost
- Large employers (250+ employees) contribute 30 per cent of the course cost
The course cohort numbers are small, providing one‑to‑one support, hands‑on time, and a personalised learning experience that builds confidence quickly. Therefore, places are limited for the May and September courses.
