Professor Stephen de Mora begins term as IMarEST president

Professor Stephen de Mora has formally taken office as president of the Institute for Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
IMarEST is a global professional body and charity representing over 12,500 marine engineers, scientists and technologists in more than 120 countries. It promotes marine expertise through knowledge exchange, training and professional development, while collaborating with industry, academia and regulators to uphold standards.
During his inaugural speech yesterday (26 March 2025) at the institute’s AGM, Professor de Mora highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach within the marine sector. “I am committed to using my term as IMarEST president to foster collaboration and drive innovation within our sector,” said De Mora.
A key priority for his tenure will be strengthening IMarEST’s technical influence and increasing its representation.
“The world’s oceans are in crisis, and the IMarEST is uniquely positioned to bring together global experts in engineering, science and technology to create integrated solutions for the marine environment,” said De Mora. “However, we need more scientists to join the conversation, as well as individuals from diverse backgrounds and those at the beginning of their careers.”
De Mora previously served as chief executive of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the UK. His research interests include environmental analytical chemistry, marine pollution monitoring and assessment, chemical oceanography, biogeochemistry and polar science. He has participated in research expeditions at sea, as well as in Arctic and Antarctic environments.
Chris Goldsworthy, CEO of the IMarEST, says: “Professor de Mora’s appointment is a significant milestone for the IMarEST. His scientific expertise will undoubtedly enhance our membership offerings and representation in this area, and we look forward to the opportunities his leadership will bring.”
Professor Deborah Greaves OBE, an ocean engineering specialist, was named president elect during the AGM. The leadership team now includes the current president, Professor de Mora, immediate past president, Yves de Leener, and president elect, Professor Greaves. Together, they will guide the Institute and represent IMarEST internationally.
