Castoldi waterjets power fully electric Ravenna Futura
Ravenna Futura, a fully electric, zero-emission workboat, has been launched in Ravenna, Italy. The 15-metre vessel was built to operate in the Port of Ravenna, using lithium and lead battery packs integrated with photovoltaic solar panels and an electric motor coupled to waterjets.
Ravenna Futura uses twin Castoldi TD 284 EVT waterjets paired with electric motors. The drivetrain produces no exhaust emissions during operation. With no exposed propellers, the waterjets are intended to reduce risks to marine life in shallow waters and sensitive natural areas.
Italian manufacturer Castoldi, which manufactures waterjet propulsion systems and yacht tenders, says precise steering and immediate thrust response at any speed help the vessel manoeuvre in confined spaces, including harbours and narrow waterways such as canals.
Giacomo Castoldi, CEO of Castoldi, says: “Ravenna Futura shows how waterjet propulsion can play a key role in the transition to green boating. Efficiency is at the heart of electric navigation, and our experience allows us to make the most of every kilowatt available on board.”
The news comes two months after Castoldi introduced the Turbodrive 340 H.C.T., completing the transition of its waterjet range to the company’s latest design generation. The renewal programme has been carried out progressively over several years and now extends across every model currently in production.
Founded in 1962 by Luigi Castoldi, the company has manufactured waterjet propulsion systems since the 1960s and reports more than 40,000 installations worldwide. Its portfolio includes waterjets from 50 to 2,700 mHP, alongside a line of jet tenders introduced in the late 1990s. The tender range now comprises 14 models, including three that are SOLAS-certified and the 10.5m JT 34 Limo limousine tender. Castoldi waterjets are type-approved by Bureau Veritas, ABS and RINA.
