MDL expands Shamrock Quay Marina

MDL Marinas has acquired a 3.2-acre plot at Lower William Street in Southampton, on the UK’s south coast, offering expansion opportunities for its Shamrock Quay Marina.

The marina group says the newly purchased acreage, with prime waterfront and deep-water access, represents a strategic acquisition, enabling MDL to expand operations across both its Shamrock Quay and nearby Saxon Wharf Marina over time, giving both short-term and long-term development opportunities to extend the services on offer to its berth holders, visitors and other marina businesses.

This marks the latest in a series of upgrades for MDL facilities. Last month, MDL confirmed details of a £1.2m upgrade to its Hamble Point Marina. A further £1.3m has been allocated for significant upgrades to its Torquay Marina in Devon, part of a total £7m investment across its network of UK marinas for 2023/24.

Opportunities for Shamrock Quay Marina could include expanding MDL’s dry stack services, boat storage, and increased car parking, as well as enhanced superyacht berthing and expanded boat manufacturing facilities.

The land, officially designated as Millstone Point, is currently owned and operated by Oil Spill Response Limited and incorporates a large building with offices, which MDL plans to rent out to potential tenants looking for office space within a marina setting.

“Today marks a pivotal moment for MDL Marinas as we proudly unveil our latest expansion in Southampton waters,” says Michael Glanville, managing director at MDL Marinas. “With the acquisition of the 3.2-acre plot, we’re not only securing prime waterfront real estate but also reaffirming our long-term commitment to growth and innovation.

“This strategic move positions Shamrock Quay to become one of the UK’s largest trading boatyards, demonstrating our dedication in serving the boating community with excellence, offering unparalleled facilities and services to all our marina customers.”

MDL says that Shamrock Quay Marina – located in the heart of the River Itchen, with the backdrop of Chessel Bay providing scenic overwater views – offers a blend of sheltered waters and access to world-class sailing conditions, with the city of Southampton located a short distance away.

The 255-berth marina offers services and facilities including refit and boatbuilding, specialist marine trades and a 70-metre superyacht berth, as well as popular bar and restaurant The Bistro Shamrock Quay.
