WATCH: Fire onboard 27m superyacht in Italy: “We saved people, I lost everything”

Superyacht billowing smoke off the Italian coast

A 27 metre Pershing 88 superyacht caught fire off the coast of Positano, Italy, on Friday (22Jul22).

According to the Italian news outlet Italy 24, the fire broke out while the yacht was cruising off the small archipelago of Li Galli along the popular Amalfi coast. The Italian coast guard attended the scene after being alerted by swimmers.

Reports state that a coast guard RIB took those onboard to safety and a coast guard helicopter successfully put out the fire, which stopped the yacht from sinking.

The yacht, which departed from Capri, is thought to have had eight people onboard, including an English family and two crew members. No one was hurt during the incident, with the yacht’s captain saying, “we saved people, I lost everything”, having lost all his personal belongings in the fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. An investigation is now underway by the Italian authorities.

This is not the first superyacht fire along the Italian coast this summer. In May, the 27m superyacht Naseem caught ablaze and sank in Puglia, five miles off the Santa Maria di Leuca coast.
