Wetwheels Cymru campaigns to expand accessible boating in Wales

Wetwheels Geoff Holt (2) Wetwheels was founded by Geoff Holt MBE.

Wetwheels Foundation, a UK charity providing fully accessible boating experiences for disabled people, is seeking to establish a permanent presence in Wales. The charity enables participants to experience time on the water in a safe and supported environment, with opportunities to steer the boat and engage with the experience firsthand.

Currently, there is no dedicated Wetwheels boat in Wales. To address this, the foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to raise £300,000 to introduce a permanent powerboat and team in the country. The charity says this new initiative aims to improve access to the water for disabled individuals and ensure inclusive maritime experiences across Wales.

Wetwheels was founded by Geoff Holt MBE DL, who has worked to improve access to sailing for disabled people. Holt, a lifelong sailor, was paralysed at the age of 18 following an accident. He later became the first disabled person to sail single-handed around Great Britain and the first quadriplegic to sail unassisted across the Atlantic. He has received multiple accolades, including Yachtsman of the Year and an MBE for services to disabled sailing.

One in five people identify as living with a disability in Wales, according to the most recent census. Despite this, opportunities for accessible boating remain limited. Many coastal communities in Wales face economic and social challenges, with Cardiff identified in the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation as an area with some of the highest levels of economic, social and health inequalities. Research indicates that being on or near the water has positive effects on mental health, reducing stress and promoting social inclusion.

From 7 to 11 April, the Wetwheels South-West vessel will visit Bayscape Marina in Cardiff to demonstrate the charity’s work. During this period, local residents will have the opportunity to board the boat and experience a Wetwheels trip. Wales has over 1,000 km of coastline, providing a potential setting for a dedicated Wetwheels boat.

“We’ve seen the incredible impact of Wetwheels across the UK, and we know the demand for these experiences exists in Wales. The joy of being on the water should be open to everyone, regardless of ability,” says Holt. “Now, it’s about making it happen. We are calling on supporters to join us in bringing Wetwheels Cymru to life.”

To establish a permanent Wetwheels vessel in Cardiff, the charity is seeking financial support from businesses, sponsors, philanthropic individuals and foundations. It is also looking to collaborate with local and national stakeholders to raise awareness and build support for the initiative. More information about the campaign, and how to donate, is available on the JustGiving page.

Wetwheels recently expanded to Scotland, with Princess Anne making an appearance at Port Edgar Marina in Edinburgh to help launch the country’s first Wetwheels vessel, Wetwheels Edinburgh, in 2023.
