Greek government launches digital charter permission
The Greek government has launched a new e-charter permission platform, making it easier to apply for charter permission digitally.
The Greek Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy says the one-stop digital application process is simplified to facilitate yachting in Greece. At the same time, it will be possible for Greek authorities to record, monitor and control the activity of the ships using the service.
Greece is targeting marine tourism as one way to contribute to the country’s economic development as part of the national maritime development strategy.
The “e-CharterPermission” platform went live on 29 December 2023. In a statement, the ministry says the digital application platform will contribute to a ‘modern and clear framework’ for the operation of commercial yachts in the country.
The “e-CharterPermission” platform specifically aids in the issuance of the “Charter Permission of a certain capacity of a professional pleasure vessel recognised in accordance with the law of another country — Charter Permission”.
This permission grants the right for professional pleasure vessels, under a foreign flag of more than 35m, to charter in Greece. The two license types are the “Charter Permission” type, for a full charter contract executed entirely within the Greek territory, and the “Charter Permission Plus” type, for the execution of a full charter contract, with a start or end point within Greece.
The license duration is initially set at 28 days, although this may be subject to modification.
In a statement, the European Committee for Professional Yachting (ECPY) says: “We are delighted to be able, finally, to announce that the launch of the charter e-permission platform has been announced, enabling visiting yachts to register online and pay VAT and other taxes allowing them to embark and disembark legally in Greece.
