Sunreef developing zero-emission sailing catamaran

Sunreef Zero Cat

The Sunreef R&D Department is developing Zero Cat — a new ‘zero emissions’ sailing superyacht that, theoretically, offers unlimited range.

The Zero Cat catamaran will measure over 90 feet (27.4m) and is set to combine hydrogen power and electric propulsion to achieve a more sustainable approach to cruising.

The Zero Cat will use a hydrogen generator to produce hydrogen from methanol on board. The system will also benefit from the power produced by the yacht’s solar power system, with solar cells built into the yacht’s entire bodywork. The energy generated by the yacht’s fuel cell system will be used for both the electric propulsion and hotel loads.

“Our goal is to revolutionise the industry by offering discerning customers an exceptional zero-emission sailing experience,” says Nicolas Lapp, CTO of Sunreef Yachts. “This project represents a milestone in our ongoing commitment to protecting our oceans and preserving the natural beauty of the sea.”

Sunreef has pivoted to cleaner technology to power its luxury yachts in recent years. In 2022, the Polish boatbuilder unveiled the first images of its latest solar-electric craft, the Sunreef Supreme 70 Eco.

Last year, Sunreef announced a new shipyard in Dubai, in response to rising demand from the Middle East, Asia and Australia. In March 2022, the Sunreef delivered its first 24-metre Sunreef 80 Eco catamaran in Dubai.

With composite-integrated solar panels built into the hull sides and superstructure and bimini, the company described the Sunreef 80 Eco as a ‘pioneer in green yachting’.
